•A new monomer containing dipyridophenazine units has been successfully synthesized.•A polymer (PFDPPZ) has been prepared by Suzuki polymerization.•PFDPPZ shows a turn-off fluorescent response in the presence of Cu2+ over cations.
A planar conjugated polymer (PFDPPZ) containing dipyridophenazine (dppz) groups in the main chain has been designed and synthesized which showed highly selective ‘turn off’ fluorescence behavior in the presence of Cu2+ ions. The selectivity of PFDPPZ toward metal ions in CHCl3/ethanol (v/v: 80/20) was investigated by UV absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results showed that this chemosensor exhibited good selectivity toward Cu2+ over other metal ions, and the fluorescence of PFDPPZ could be completely quenched by Cu2+ ions at the concentration as low as 2.0 × 10−6 mol L−1 in dilute solutions.
