Abstract

•Electrpolymerization of aniline in the presence of new synthesized poly(maleic acid-co-vinyl acetate).•Electrosynthesis of nano-colloidal coating of the polyaniline (NCPANI) on steel.•Introducing NCPANI coating as a significant protection against corrosion of steel 430SS.

A smooth, adherent and nano-colloidal polyaniline (NCPANI) coating was electrosynthezied in poly(maleic acid-co-vinyl acetate) (PMAVA) matrix by cyclic voltammetry in order to protect the ferritic 430 stainless steel (430SS) from corrosion. The electrodeposited coating was characterized by cyclic voltammetry, UV–vis and FT-IR techniques. The morphology and the structure of the film were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Corrosion behavior of coated steel was evaluated in 3.5% NaCl solution by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The obtained results revealed that NCPANI coating provided a significant protection against corrosion progression.
