A simple and effective process of liquid nitrogen quenching has been developed, a twofold increase in the short-circuit current of the P3HT:PCBM bulk heterojunction photovoltaic cell being thereby achieved. Roughened surface and phase separation of the crystalline P3HT and PCBM domains in the liquid nitrogen quenched device appear to give rise to the enhanced power conversion efficiency.
