Abstract
This paper investigated the fabrication of in situ Al/Mg2Si functionally gradient materials (FGMs) by the electromagnetic separation method. The results show that due to formation of primary Mg2Si particle clusters, it is difficult to fabricate in situ Al/Mg2Si FGMs with a smooth gradient distribution of primary Mg2Si particles when alloy composition is Al–Mg–Si system without other additional elements. Adding element Ti can prevent formation of primary Mg2Si particle clusters and contributes to fabricate in situ Al/Mg2Si FGMs with a smooth gradient distribution of primary Mg2Si particles.
