Abstract

The inhibition effect of propargyl alcohol (PA) on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of super 13Cr stainless steel in CO2-saturated CaCl2 completion fluid in the presence of 0.2% acetic acid was investigated. The results indicate that super 13Cr steel is susceptible to SCC without addition of inhibitor. PA can form polymeric protective layers on super 13Cr steel. Low-concentration PA increases hydrogen permeation and accelerates SCC of super 13Cr steel. High-concentration PA decreases hydrogen permeation and effectively inhibits SCC.

► Inhibition effect of propargyl alcohol on stress corrosion cracking is studied. ► Propargyl alcohol is found to form polymeric protective layers on super 13Cr steel. ► Low-concentration propargyl alcohol is found to promote stress corrosion cracking. ► High-concentration propargyl alcohol is found to inhibit stress corrosion cracking.
