Abstract
► Ti3AlC2 and TiAl were corroded at 800-1100 °C for up to 180 h in Ar-0.2% SO2 gases. ► Ti3AlC2 corroded according to the equation: Ti3AlC2 + O2 → rutile-TiO2 + α-Al2O3 + (CO or CO2). ► TiAl corroded according to the equation: TiAl + SO2 → rutile-TiO2 + α-Al2O3 + TiS + TiS2. ► The formed α-Al2O3 protected Ti3AlC2 from aggressive corrosion.
