Abstract
New sol–gel coatings for the corrosion protection of aluminum pigments were developed. To this end, the pigment particles are first coated with a silica layer by phosphoric acid-catalyzed sol–gel processing of Si(OEt)4, to which either hexadecyltrimethoxysilane or dimethyldimethoxysilane is condensed. The coated pigments have excellent anticorrosive properties in alkaline solutions as well as under boiling water conditions.
