Abstract

In this piece of research the authors show how to build an experiment that can impose rotating magnetic stirring (RMF) during the solidification of a cylindrical cast with thermal data acquisition. Several tests were carried out at increasing frequency and magnetic intensity. The discontinuous solidification curves of the castings were acquired by a thermocouple connected to a high resolution data recording system.Thermal analysis, EBSD, quantitative metallography and DSC were used to characterize the influence of RMF on solidification. Important changes were found in the microstructure, namely the quantity and size of eutectic phases, grain size within the eutectic cell, remarkable differences in crystallographic disorientations and clustering of eutectic phases.
