•Luminescent orthosilicate materials composed of Ba9Y2Si6O24:Eu were prepared.•Distinct photoluminescence properties of Eu3+ and Eu2+ were elucidated.•The CIE values of Eu-doped red or green phosphors were obtained.•They can be used in applications involving white-light near-UV light-emitting-diodes.
Barium–yttrium orthosilicate Ba9Y2Si6O24 host and luminescent materials composed of Ba9−3m/2EumY2Si6O24 (m = 0.01–0.5) and Ba9Y2−nEunSi6O24 (n = 0.01–0.5) were prepared via a solid-state reaction. The photoluminescence excitation and emission properties of Eu3+ and Eu2+ in the prepared orthosilicate phosphors were elucidated. The dependence of the luminescent intensity of the Eu3+- and Eu2+-doped alkaline–earth orthosilicates on the content of the activators has been investigated. The desired CIE (International Commission on Illumination) values, including emissions throughout the red and green regions of the spectra, were obtained using these phosphors. Based on the integrated emission, the relative quantum efficiency of Ba9Y1.6Eu0.4Si6O24 was determined. These Eu-doped red or green phosphors could be used in applications involving white-light near-UV light-emitting-diodes.
