Spectroscopic study of Mn4+ ions in SrLaAlO4 has been performed in the 5–500 K temperature range. The photoluminescence of Mn4+ ions around 714 nm originates from the 2E → 4A2 transition. The energy distance between the 2E and 4T2 levels is about 2500 cm−1. The Mn4+ emission in SrLaAlO4 undergoes rapid thermal quenching already above 250 K that can be caused by intrinsic point defects of the host having energy levels overlapping with the 4T2 level of Mn4+ ions.
