Abstract

Optical absorption, luminescence and decay profiles of Dy3+-doped alkaline earth titanium phosphate glasses were studied. The absorption transitions in the UV–VIS–NIR regions were assigned to different transitions from the 6H15/2 ground state to various excited states. The measured energy levels were fitted to the free-ion Hamiltonian model by diagonalising the energy matrices of 4f9 electronic configuration of Dy3+ ion. Judd–Ofelt parameters were evaluated using the measured oscillator strengths by least squares fit method. The radiative transition probabilities stimulated emission cross-sections, optical gain parameters and quantum efficiencies were determined for the 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 emission transition at 574 nm. The reasons for the emission of white luminescence as well as the measurement of 4F9/2 metastable state lifetimes were discussed.
