Abstract
Enhanced compressive ductility was imparted to a magnesium billet by surrounding it with an aluminium case. The aluminium casing prevented bifurcation and raised the hydrostatic compressive stress. Strains up to 2.4 were attained at room temperature. The magnesium recrystallized under ambient conditions soon after the deformation, producing an average recrystallized grain size of 2 μm.
