Abstract

A constitutive model based on the mechanisms of dislocation glide and deformation twinning for hexagonal close-packed (hcp) metals is proposed. To account for the limited availability of slip systems in an hcp metal, an incompatibility stress, which evolves with strain, is included. Numerical simulations compared with experiments suggest that the model can successfully reproduce the strain hardening of α-Ti. It is believed that the model has a more general applicability and can be used for other hcp metals as well.
