Abstract
Fe–Pd-based ferromagnetic shape memory alloys are based on metastable random solid solutions in the austenite and martensite phases, which require preparation from the equilibrium γ phase by rapid cooling. Employing splats, we explore the impact of annealing treatment on the disordered solid solution, phase formation and lattice defects using a combined conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy – X-ray diffraction study. We discuss indications of short range ordering tendencies as well as the impact of splat microstructure and defects on phase formation.
