Abstract
A coupled thermomechanical formulation is presented to investigate local heating in shear banding of metallic glasses. The heat source is related to mechanical deformation; heat conduction and temperature distribution are revealed through finite-element modeling. We show that the maximum local temperature rise inside the propagating shear bands can reach only tens of degrees; however, strain rate is found to affect local heating significantly. The results shed new light on the controversies over experimental findings and theoretical explanations.
