Abstract
Cr3C2 particle-reinforced surface metal matrix composites (MMCs) were synthesized on low carbon steel using the gas tungsten arc melt injection process and their microstructures investigated. The results show that the carbides exist in the surface MMC mainly in the form of unmelted Cr3C2. Most of the Cr3C2 particles appear in the upper part of the surface MMC, and the dissolution of the Cr3C2 particles in the upper part is less than of those in the middle and bottom parts. The wear resistance of the surface MMC is greatly improved.
