Abstract
This study reports the deformation characteristics of submicrocrystalline Ti–6Al–4V at low temperatures (∼0.5Tm). Microstructural observations revealed that further grain refinement was not attained at a high strain of ∼4 since microstructure evolution was marked by an increase in the fraction of high-angle grain boundaries rather than by a reduction in grain size. Mechanical properties of submicrocrystalline Ti–6Al–4V were evaluated in tension and are discussed based on a dynamic-materials model.
