Abstract
The classical Read-Shockley model for grain boundary energy is employed to derive an expression for grain boundary stiffness. The stiffness increases linearly with boundary misorientation and is maximum for asymmetric tilts with equal densities of the constituent dislocation sets. We also show that the intrinsic waviness in the boundary morphology is coupled to the stiffness.
