Abstract
Shear textures in the stir zone of a near-αα-titanium friction stir weld were examined by electron backscatter diffraction. The texture matches that of a D2(1¯1¯2)[111] bcc simple shear texture that was transformed to hcp according to the Burgers orientation relationship, which aligns {110}bcc with {0001}hcp, although there is also evidence of a P1P1 hcp shear texture component. Deformation therefore occurred predominantly above the ββ transus, and the αα texture was inherited from a simple shear texture of the ββ phase.
