Abstract
The free sintering of metallic powders is investigated by the discrete element method which allows the particulate nature of the material to be taken explicitly into account. A simple coarsening model is introduced and its use allows a favorable comparison of simulated densification rates with experimental data from the literature. The anisotropic shrinkage of numerical green compacts obtained from numerical close die compaction is also investigated.
