Abstract
The definition of a ‘special’ grain boundary is addressed. A definition based on the presence of at least one low-index plane at a boundary is germane to grain boundary engineering. Experimental evidence is demonstrated. From the emphasis on boundary planes, ‘grain boundary plane engineering’ should be promoted.
