Abstract
We discuss the challenges and controversies involved in obtaining a coarse-grained description of dislocation energetics and dynamics. We start by outlining the structural and dynamical considerations, specific to dislocations, that are associated with homogenization. We then briefly review several existing strategies. Particular attention is paid to the role of dislocation substructure, critical in determining mechanical response, in a coarse-grained representation. Finally, promising future research directions are highlighted.
