Abstract
Acoustic emission (AE) appears to be the most promising experimental tool to explore the complexity of collective dislocation dynamics. AE experiments performed on ice Ih revealed a scale-free critical picture of dislocational plasticity that challenges the classical continuum models of plasticity. The generic nature of this complexity is discussed.
