Abstract
The compressive deformation behavior of the semi-solid 20 vol.% Si3N4w/Al–Si composite and corresponding Al–Si alloy has been investigated. The volume fraction of liquid in the semi-solid composite can be measured by DSC analysis. The relationship between the isothermal holding time in the semi-solid state and compressive behavior was investigated in detail. The results indicated that the addition of Si3N4 whisker accelerated the melting of the composite. Strain softening appears during compressive deformation of the semi-solid composite.
