Abstract
Friction stir welding (FSW) of as-extruded, nanostructured Al–4.0Y–4.0Ni–0.9Co alloy produced by amorphous powders resulted in a significant improvement in ductility. The enhanced ductility in the welds is attributed to homogenization of the microstructure during FSW. The microstructural changes include the transformation of inhomogeneous matrix grains to uniform equiaxed ones and reduction of high aspect ratio second phase particles.
