Abstract

The tribological properties of hard chromium coated 1010 carbon steel were investigated under different sliding distances using a pin-on-disc machine. The coefficient of friction was found to decrease as the sliding distance increases. Few thin microcracks initiated at the surfaces of hard chromium layer with a thickness of 7.5 μm. The severity of cracking is increased with increasing the coating thickness. The wear tracks of the hard chromium coated layers also showed similar cracking behavior.
