Nanowires layered compounds MxV2O5+ε·nH2O (M = Mg, Mn), similar to electrolyte e-V2O5, are prepared by a simple aqueous method. It consists of mixing magnesium nitrate or manganese nitrate with a boiling solution of vanadium oxide (obtained by reacting V2O5 with few mL of 30 vol.% H2O2 followed by addition of distilled water). After several minutes of stirring at ∼100 °C, a precipitate forms without pH control. The mixture is maintained under stirring for several hours at ∼90 °C. EDAX analysis and the thermal analysis show the formation of the following compounds: Mg0.15V2O5.15·2.4H2O and Mn0.2V2O5.4·2.1H2O. At relatively higher temperature (∼450 °C), orthorhombic V2O5 and MV2O6 (M = Mg, Mn) are formed.
