Abstract

A new 2-D layer copper vanadium phosphate [Cu(4,4′-bipy)(VO)(HPO4)(H2PO4)]2 (4,4′-bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine) 1 formed by the assemblage of two kind of 1-D chains has been synthesized hydrothermally and characterized structurally. This compound was shown by single crystal structure analysis to be an unprecedented layer structure constructed from {Cu(4,4′-bipy)}2n2n+ chains linked in the second dimension by the [(VO)(HPO4)(H2PO4)]2n2n− chains. In the packing arrangement, the structure can be viewed as a 3-D supramolecular framework connected by the combination of coordination bonds, hydrogen bonds and π–ππ–π interactions as well as weakly coordinative interactions. Another considerable feature is that we can isolate two helices from the [(VO)(HPO4)(H2PO4)]2n2n− chain, respectively. Moreover, the two helices are both left-hand. Magnetic measurements indicate the existence of antiferromagnetic interactions in compound 1.
