The new lead potassium thiophosphate KPbPS4 was synthesized by reacting Pb with an in situ formed melt of K2S3, P2S5 and S. Its structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. KPbPS4 crystallizes as yellow crystals in the orthorhombic system, space group Pnma (no. 62), a=17.045(3) Åa=17.045(3) Å, b=6.660(1) Åb=6.660(1) Å, c=6.473(1) Åc=6.473(1) Å, V=734.9(3) Å3V=734.9(3) Å3, Z=4Z=4. The structure is isotypic with that of KEuPS4 and consists of two-dimensional [PbPS4]nn− anionic layers extending in the yz plane, separated by alkali cations. The layers are comprised of alternating zigzag parallel chains of PbS6 trigonal prisms running along [010] connected by PS4 tetrahedral units.
