The TlI complex of 1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dionate (dibenzoylmethanide, DBM−), [Tl2(DBM)2]n, has been synthesized and characterized. The single-crystal X-ray data show there are two different Tl environments. One type of Tl-atom in the TlO4C6Tl2 environment is twelve-coordinated, with two weak Tl⋯Tl and hexahapto (η6η6) interactions, TlC6. The other type of Tl-atom in the TlO4C2Tl2 units is eight-coordinated, with two weak Tl⋯Tl and dihapto (η2η2) interactions, TlC2. The dimeric units [Tl2(DBM)2] linked through Tl⋯Tl and polyhapto interactions, TlC6 and TlC2, and produce the 1D polymeric chains. Comparison with the analogous Pb(II) compound indicates that TlI may also act as both a Lewis acid and a Lewis base.
