Abstract
Large output power, compactness and lightness in weight are indispensable for vehicular engines [1]., [2]. An experimental study for large output power, high thermal efficiency and near-zero emissions without any exhaust gas after-treatment was carried out by using a small 3-cylinder, 4-stroke hydrogen fuelled direct injection engine converted from a gasoline direct injection engine with a 660 cc displacement and the compression ratio of 9.1, thanks to the properties of hydrogen fuel for internal combustion engines such as the wide flammable limits, the extremely high burning velocity, the antiknock together with near-zero NOx emissions on the lean mixture operation.
