Abstract
⺠A new mechanism for the defect formation in an anion sublattice is proposed. ⺠The mechanism is associated with the Jahn-Teller instability. ⺠The instability occurs near the cation impurities in the excited state. ⺠Interaction between the impurity level and host continuum plays an important role.
