Abstract
⺠High strain zone (HSZ) formation around nanoparticles leads to increased tensile ductility. ⺠HSZs emanating from nanoparticle surfaces lead to tensile toughening. ⺠Dislocation chains linking nanoparticles may be considered as finely localized HSZs. ⺠Nanoparticle stimulated nucleation (NSN) enables compressive toughening.
