Abstract
► The presence of in situ formed TiB2 improved both strength and fracture toughness of SiC-TiB2 composite. ► The heat treatment of sintered samples further improved mechanical properties. ► Maximum fracture toughness of 6.6 MPa m1/2 was measured in samples containing 24 vol% TiB2. ► Maximum strength of ∼600 MPa was measured in samples containing 12 vol% TiB2. ► Microstructure consisting of small but elongated SiC grains was the key to toughening and strengthening.
