Abstract

•The main contribution of this paper is that we proposed a novel high-speed FSK modulator which is consisting of four phase modulators. In this method, the architecture of the FSK modulator is simple comparing with six phase modulators of traditional FSK modulator. In addition, our FSK modulator is directly driven by data signal without sinusoidal signal, which can eliminate the sinusoidal signal's influence on the FSK performance.•40 Gbit/s FSK signal based on our novel FSK modulator is modulated and simulated. It indicates that the FSK modulation scheme has good performance in the high-speed transmission system. The NRZ-FSK signal under different dispersion compensation schemes is investigated in this paper.

We propose and investigate a novel frequency shift keying (FSK) format for 40-Gb/s transmission system. In this paper, we present the generation, the dispersion compensation, the detection and the performance evaluation of the proposed FSK format. FSK signal is generated based on the bias voltages of a novel external FSK modulator, which is consisting of two LiNbO3 Mach–Zehnder (MZ) modulators. By numerical simulation, the transmission performance and the different dispersion compensation schemes of the FSK signal are discussed.
