Abstract

A slim direct lit backlight concept aimed at large size, narrow bezel displays is presented here. It offers a combined design alternative in direct lit systems by circumventing hot spots and thermal expansion issues for large size displays while keeping the light guide plate thickness below 4 mm. An air gap between individual light guide segments allows room for adequate thermal expansion. The top surface of the backlight is a combination of a specific equiangular curve and a numerically defined free form curvature. The overall concept allows for 2D dimming functionality. Numerical simulations of shape filleting in consideration with conventional molding techniques are also presented.
