Abstract

In this paper, a novel WDM-ROF-PON architecture based on 16QAM-OFDM modulation for bidirectional access networks is proposed and demonstrated. We theoretically investigate the operating principle of the system, in our simulation, the intensity modulation of 10 Gb/s 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (16-QAM) orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signals are employed for downlink and the demodulated base-band signals are demonstrated, and the optical carrier is reused for uplink. Both the downstream and upstream signals have been transmitted over 40-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF-28) without optical dispersion compensation. Our theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results show the WDM-ROF-PON architecture will be a promising candidate in next generation optical networks.
