Abstract
Many optical diagnostic systems collect light from an extended region. This paper presents a technique for reducing the etendue to be accepted from a region of significant longitudinal depth. The needs of LIDAR are highlighted, however the principle is also valid for other systems such as collection of light from a line of sight into a fibre.
