Abstract

This study numerically investigates the nonlinear dynamics and the changes of the threshold of chaotic behavior in a pump-modulation Nd:YVO4 laser using the single-humped and doubled-humped modulation profiles. The nonlinear dynamics mainly follows the period-doubling route to chaos. The modulation depth needed to reach chaotic behavior varies significantly as the modulation profile changes. The impulse function, defined as the area of modulation profile in half period, can govern the threshold for the chaotic behavior, and the shape of modulation can be used for controlling the nonlinear dynamics in pump-modulation lasers.
