Abstract
The powerful capabilities of electronic digital signal processing and digital-to-analog conversion for implementing waveform generation in an optical transmitter are illustrated by considering pre-compensation for optical filtering, fiber dispersion, and nonlinear modulation dynamics.
Research highlights► We consider pre-compensation in optical fiber communication systems. ► Pre-compensation is applicable to optical modulators and directly modulated lasers. ► Pre-compensation for optical filtering increases the tolerable amount of filtering. ► Pre-compensation for fiber dispersion increases the maximum transmission distance. ► Pre-compensation for laser nonlinear modulation dynamics improves the signal quality.
