Abstract
► We investigate the emergence of rare events during the Raman fiber amplification. ► The statistical properties of the signal are influenced by walk-off and depletion. ► We calculate analytically the probability density function of the amplified signal. ► Experiments carried out at telecommunication wavelengths validate our conclusions.
