Abstract
From studying the statistical behaviour of return-to-zero (RZ) differential phase shift keyed (DPSK) transmission links dominated by fibre nonlinearity, we observe strictly non-Gaussian behaviour in the tails of underlying received current probability density functions. Using this analysis, we derive a new statistical estimate of bit error rate (BER) in pseudo-linear transmission regimes under the growing influence of fibre nonlinearity.
