Abstract
We report on use of billet ram extrusion for the first time to fabricate microstructured polymer optical fiber preforms. The shape and relative size of the air holes in the preform are well preserved during fiber drawing. Extrusion conditions have been optimized to prevent issues such as die swell and thermal degradation of the polymer material.
