Abstract
An approximate analytical analysis is given describing the strongly nonlinear evolution of optical pulses in nonlinear fibres with normal dispersion. The result provides a good explicit description of the evolution of initially chirp-free Gaussian-shaped pulses, including the developing chirp and the successive pulse rectangularization that ultimately leads to wave breaking.
