Abstract

The current work is focused on the impact of sulphur on the growth of carbon nanostructures by the decomposition of benzene in the presence of ferrocene at reduced pressure. The influence has been studied for a wide range of sulphur concentrations. Its effect on the processes taking place inside the reactor, beginning from the decomposition of the chemical compounds up to the formation of the different structures is shown.

Research highlights► Influence of sulphur on the morphology of CNTs synthesized from benzene and ferrocene ► Sulphur promotes the growth of thick MWCNTs at low temperature ► Small addition of sulphur enhances the formation of SWCNTs at high temperature ► High concentration of sulphur destroys the catalytic activity of iron for CNT growth ► High S concentration promotes the growth of FeS ‘sea urchin’ at high temperature.
