► We compare microstructure evolution of two-phase and three-phase ceramic materials. ► We study effects of particle location and boundary energy ratios on grain growth. ► Three-phase materials have better microstructure than two-phase materials. ► Boundary energy ratio has significant influence on the pinning effect of particles.
