•ε-Martensitic plates have four different morphological characteristics, including edge, incomplete, island and complete.•Several isolated ε-martensite plates with several decade nanometers are characterized by HRTEM.•The interfacial structure of “island” ε-martensitic boundaries consists of basal–pyramidal and pyramidal–basal interfaces.
Different characterization techniques are jointly utilized to carry out the morphological characteristics for ε-martensitic plates in cobalt, especially for the structural characterization of “island” ε-martensitic plate. Using high resolution transmission electron microscopy, we characterized the interfacial structure of “island” ε-martensitic boundaries with the special misorientation (70.5°/<112̅0>), and found the stepped-like boundaries consist of basal–pyramidal and pyramidal–basal interfaces.
