Abstract
In this study, evolution of phase and microstructure during synthesis of Ti(C,N) by carbothermal reduction–nitridation (CRN) of nanosized anatase/carbon black mixture were investigated using X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicate phase evolution sequences are: TiO2(anatase)→TiO2(rutile)→Ti5O9→Ti4O7→Ti3O5→Ti(N,O)→TiN→Ti(C,N) or TiO2 (anatase)→TiO2 (rutile)→Ti5O9→Ti4O7→Ti2O3→Ti(C,N,O)→Ti(C,N). During initial stage of CRN reaction, the pronounced grain growth of the oxide particles was caused by the formation of lower titanium oxides. However, products grain was gradually diminished with the formation of cubic phase.
