Abstract
The development of platinum/titanium bi-metal laminated composites is useful for improving the mechanical characteristics of platinum and for reducing platinum consumption. A multi-layered Pt0.5Ti0.2Zr/Ti laminate composite was prepared by hot pressing and rolling using foils of Pt0.5Ti0.2Zr micro-alloy and Ti. The effect of the pressing and rolling temperatures on the tensile properties and microstructures of the composite was studied. The results showed that the compaction temperature of the composite stack should not be very high, because at high temperatures, metal compounds are formed at the layer interfaces, which adversely affect the mechanical properties and structure of the composite. It was also observed that the micro-alloying method effectively improves the layer continuity and the straightness and uniformity of the laminated structures. The composites manufactured by hot pressing and large deformation rolling at 500 °C exhibit excellent tensile properties and a good microstructure. The mechanical performance of the composites is significantly improved with respect to that of pure platinum.
