Abstract
In this work, we employed VIF technique to study multi-cracking behavior of titania, alumina and zirconia ceramic oxide coatings obtained by plasma spraying. To calculate VIF toughness, we propose (i) to select two crack equations for radial-median and Palmqvist cracking modes respectively, (ii) to adjust the crack equation of Miranzo and Moya for intermediate cracking mode, (iii) to develop a mathematical approach to determine the cracking mode, (iv) to take into account the multi-crack network by defining an equivalent four-crack system and (v) to propose a universal crack equation applicable independently of the cracking mode.
